Extrait du livre

Mr. Sherlock Holmes was sitting at the breakfast table. I stood by the fireplace and picked up the stick wich our visitor had left behind him the night before. It had a broad silver band with some words on it : « To James Mortimer, from his friends of the C.C.H. 1884. »
« Well, Watson, what do you make of it ? »
Holmes was sitting with his back to me, and he could not see what I was doing.
« How did you know what I was doing ? I believe you have eyes in the back of your head. »
« I have a silver coffee-pot in front of me, » said he. « But tell me, Watson, what do you make of our visitor’s stick ? »
« I think, » Said I, « that Mr. Mortimer is an elderly doctor, well liked by those who know him, since they give him this mark of their friendship. »
   « Good, » said Holmes.
« I also think that he lives in the country, and that he goes out to see his patients on foot. »
   « Why so ? »
